Woolschool - Introduction to Jacobean Crewelwork Embroidery

DESCRIPTION:
This workshop introduces the traditional technique of Jacobean crewelwork embroidery. Working with crewel wool, participants will stitch a small botanical design based on the flowing plant forms found in historical crewelwork.
The session will cover a variety of crewelwork stitches, including stem stitch, satin stitch, trellis work, long and short stitch, seeding and French knots. Participants will learn how to use these stitches for outlines, filling and shading, and how to combine them within one design.
AIMS OF WORKSHOP:
To introduce participants to Jacobean crewelwork, working with crewel wool and a variety of traditional surface embroidery stitches.
TUTOR’S BACKGROUND:
Lucy Newman is an award-winning hand embroidery artist and experienced tutor based in Mid Wales. She trained in Printed Textile Design at Central St Martins and later studied traditional hand embroidery techniques at the Royal School of Needlework. Her contemporary embroidered artworks have been recognised with the Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery and several textile and art award shortlists. Lucy is a QEST Clothworkers’ Company Scholar and is studying for an MA in Textiles at the Royal College of Art.
