DESCRIPTION:

Learn how to make Yorkshire Buttons and turn them into a fun but practical pincushion.

AIMS OF WORKSHOP:

To teach students how to make Yorkshire Buttons using looms of varying sizes which can then be made into a pincushion.

TUTOR’S BACKGROUND:

I’ve always done some sort of crafting and was taught to knit dishcloth squares by my Mum (although she always had to cast on and off for me). She also taught me tatting using a shuttle and my abiding memory of her is the noise of the thread pulled through the shuttle as she sat tatting in the evening. My Grandma on my Dad’s side was a talented artist and sewer and made exquisite peg dolls, basing them on historical costumes with minute details including shoes, bloomers and petticoats.
I discovered button making whilst watching ‘selly telly’ and bought a kit. I have been hooked ever since. I love the history behind the buttons, both Dorset buttons from the UK and Zwirknöpfe and other fancy buttons from Europe which are used on their traditional dress. They are small but beautiful works of art and immensely satisfying to make.
I am a Trustee of Ewyas Harold Craft Centre in Herefordshire where I also teach classes and exhibit my work in their gallery.
