DESCRIPTION:
From ancient civilizations to modern times, the art and science of silk dyeing has evolved, offering a kaleidoscope of colours and unparalleled luxury that continues to captivate and inspire. A talk and workshop where you will hear a talk about the history of silks and dyes used. At the end of the talk, you will be able to dye your own embroidery threads using a simple hand painting technique to take away on the day using synthetic dyes and a steamer. These silks are 100% A Grade pure mulberry silks used for embroidery and can be hand dyed. All equipment and materials will be supplied.
AIMS OF WORKSHOP:
You will gain an understanding of the evolution of silk production and dyeing from ancient civilizations to the present day.
Discover the different dyes historically used and how modern synthetic dyes compare.
Experiment with a simple hand-painting dyeing technique for each student to dye their own A Grade pure mulberry silk embroidery threads to keep and use.
TUTOR’S BACKGROUND:
Deby is a spinner, weaver and general craftsperson who has been a teacher for many years. She has her own dyeing studio where she dyes a range of luxury fibres and is based in the Vale of Evesham. She mostly takes inspiration from her fond memories of time spent living in New Zealand and of nature around her. Deby has been involved with the Guild for a number of years, including assisting in setting up a new Guild between Evesham and Redditch.
